Hazel at the Haven and Spool booth at the farmers market, with roll-ons and belly wraps on the table
Hazel, founder of Haven and Spool

My grandmother grew castor beans along the back fence and pressed her own oil in the kitchen. It came out thick and golden, and she rubbed a little under her eyes and over her belly every night. She lived to 91, and strangers stopped her at the grocery store to ask what she used.

When she passed, I bought a bottle from the store in her memory. It was water-clear and smelled like dirty socks, and something about that felt wrong. So I took it to the farmers market and handed it to the man who sells cold-pressed oils. He turned it over, tapped the word “refined,” and said, that means hexane, honey. I stood there holding it and cried. I had been rubbing a chemical-stripped oil on my face every night thinking I was close to her. It was not her oil at all.

So in 2019 I made the bottle I wished I had. Her oil, pressed the old way, in glass, with a little roller so it goes where you want it and nowhere else. It is a few of us in San Jose. If you email, it is me who writes back.
