What does a castor oil pack actually do?
It keeps castor oil in contact with one patch of skin for hours instead of minutes. Body heat and steady pressure from the wrap help the oil absorb rather than sit on the surface. Castor oil is about 90% ricinoleic acid, plus omega 6, omega 9 and vitamin E, which is why people have been using it this way for a very long time. Contact time is the whole point, so a night beats a twenty-minute session.
Why does cold pressed matter?
Pressing the seed without heat or chemical solvent is what keeps the oil intact, which is why every serious brand prints cold pressed and hexane free on the front of the bottle. Amber glass matters for the same reason, since light works on oil slowly over months. Two bottles can look identical on a shelf and be made completely differently.
Can I just use a cloth and plastic wrap?
You can, and plenty of people start there. The trouble is that plastic wrap holds no pressure, slides the moment you turn over and leaks anyway. You end up with an hour of patchy contact and a laundry problem. Most people who say packs did nothing for them were using a setup that never stayed put long enough to find out.
How often should I use it?
Most people use a pack two to three nights a week, an hour at minimum and overnight when you can. Give it about a month at that pace before you judge it, which lines up with a 30-day guarantee.
Will it stain my sheets?
Not with a pack that has a leak-resistant layer, which is the main thing separating a proper kit from the flannel-and-towel method. If your current setup marks the bed, that is oil leaving rather than absorbing.
What if it does not work for me?
Haven & Spool takes returns for 30 days, even if the bottle has been used. Use it two or three nights a week across that month and if it has not earned a place in your evening, contact them for a refund. Do not use a castor oil pack during pregnancy, and check with your doctor first if you are nursing or taking medication.
